Darwin Gap quake will shake Chile again

A FAULT line that shook Charles Darwin in 1835 and ripped again last year is storing up yet more energy, threatening to unleash another big earthquake on Chile. Stefano Lorito of Italy’s National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology in Rome and colleagues assessed the amount of land movement during the magnitude 8.8 quake that hit Chile in February 2010, claiming over 500 lives. They found that the fault slipped by up to 19 metres along a segment north of the epicentre, close to the city of Constitución. Another large slip, measuring up to 10 metres,
