Beads, charms and condoms

In a dramatic departure from their traditional approach to medicine, South African witch doctors, known locally as sangomas, are taking part in their country’s campaign to promote the use of condoms to combat AIDS. Ruben Sher, head of the National AIDS Training Outreach says: ‘Traditional healers have a vital role to play, as they are regularly consulted by more than 80 per cent of black people.’ So, wearing their beads, furs and charms, sangomas are increasingly attending meetings across the country alongside officials from the Department of National Health and representatives of condom manufacturers. A spokesman for the Traditional Healers Association of South Africa said that the sangomas feared contracting AIDS through their frequent treatment of patients by cutting skin (to release evil) and rubbing powders into the wounds.
